Chapter 5

Moving from rooftop to rooftop, they eventually arrived at a very tall stone building set into a tree covered hillside though still well within the cities protective ring of walls. She indicated their journey above ground was over with. Slider spoke with one of the guards there, who signaled the all-clear. They found themselves quickly ushered through another hidden doorway and into a room with a stout steel door at its opposite end.

A man stood there with a ledger on a table in front of him. “We have a schedule to keep and you’re late, why is that Slider?” His tone was bland without an ounce of care in it, just matter of fact; an I asked a question, I get an answer tone.

Slider stepped up to the table a bag of coins in her hand. Reaching in, she pulled out a couple thick gold coins and tossed them onto the table in front of the man. “The passage was paid in advance, however we left a mess, this is for cleaning it up. There are a couple bodies over by Moondogs roof; I don’t want him howling about rotting corpses. Not that he would tell the enforcers, but it would be rude to leave them rotting there and attract attention. There is a body in the alley below too. The man’s eyebrow rose, as he took it all in. He then re-studied Slider from top of head to waist as that was as far as he could see, with the table in the way. He then looked at Tae and Quan as slider continued.

“Someone decided they wanted to try abducting me, I decided it was a rotten idea. One got free, and ran away when I objected. His friends weren’t so fortunate.” Her voice was tinged with as icy a quality as his was bland and matter of fact.

When she stopped speaking he just stared. Quan felt the urge to split his face open but kept his mouth shut, his hands and his feelings to himself.

Finally he spoke, “Moondogs, hmm that’s the Jaegers roof section.” he cleared his throat and crossed his arms, “Who did you say it was set you up?” he asked.

She leaned forward, fully a head shorter than him but the way she looked at him and the tone of her voice one would have thought he was the shorter one. “I didn’t say, not going to say, and when I get back I will find the rest of them and there is nothing more to say.”

The man nodded slightly then leaned down, and with one of his fingers he pushed one of the coins from off of his ledger like it was a nuisance, he then flipped a page wrote something in it, and then motioned for her and them all to move on past. There was a sense of electricity emanating from Slider and the Ledger was not about ready to be the grounding rod for the storm she was ready to unleash.
